About this pattern:

Designed, Sewn, & Quilted By: Kira Dobbs

I was determined to design and make a quilt for my local guilds' (Southwest Florida Quilters Guild) challenge for our upcoming quilt show. The challenge was to create a 20" x 20" quilt incorporating the shows theme, "What's Old is New Again.” Being obsessed with vintage 1930's fabric I thought it would be a great idea to use that fabric "what's old" in a new modern quilt design "new again". I sat down and started to sketch. I thought since the show was in February it would be fun to do a heart of some sort. After numerous sketches and calculations and screams I finally figured it out. Using EQ8 (which I am VERY new to) I took my drawings and digitally designed my quilt. I was very excited to get this quilt finished. The hardest part was picking out my fabric. I knew I was going to use vintage 1930's fabric but it took me a while to settle one which one to use (I contemplated using a juxtapose of multiple ones). I finally settled on a pretty white, pink, and red printed one. I then decided to use a white on white for the background (another type of fabric I'm quite obsessed with). I sat down with my pattern and fabric (and my trusty seam ripper) and began my work. Making sure I labeled my strips as I cut them really helped me keep track as I sewed. I finished the whole top in a short time. Excited to show someone my beautiful heart quilt I called in my fiancee. I proudly showed him the heart and he said "BACON!". I was crushed! Apparently my fabric choice looked like bacon and that is where his mind went instead of heart. Oh well, at least now I didn't have to think of a name anymore. I decided to run with it and do a pun on the whole thing naming it "Don't go Bacon my Heart". I stuck the top away for a while because I hadn't decided how I was going to quilt it (and I was still kinda upset that his first thought was bacon and I was worried it didn't look like a heart). Time passed and I realized that it was due for the show soon! I had to make a decision and get it finished. I decided to come up with my own pattern for how I was going to quilt it. I decided on hearts and heart beats. I'm really happy with how it all came together and I am excited to have it in the show. Since I put a lot of time into this I really wanted to share the love with you and make this a free pattern for you! Keep in mind I am NOT a pattern designer by any nature but I tried my best and I hope you enjoy! Also make sure you tune into our social media accounts to see photos of the finished quilt! It will be hung at the Southwest Florida Quilters Guild quilt show February 7th & 8th at the Lee Civic Center in Fort Myers, FL. If you get the chance to see it in person make sure you drop a selfie and tag us!
